GENESIS

by Rolf-Peter Wille, 1999

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was waste and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep: and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created the great sea-monsters, and every living creature that moves, wherewith the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind: and God saw that it was good. And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being.

Just at that moment the Devil was flying through the air to watch what God was doing. Thus when man inhaled his first breath he noticed some devilish and odious smell. He formed an opinion and said to himself: "This air stinks." Thus man became a philosopher. But the Lord God failed to notice this because he had watched the Devil just for one second. And God blessed man and said unto him, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the frogs and spiders. "I hate spiders!" said man. And God was impressed that He had created a philosopher with his own opinion. So He told man: "I shall give you the power to destroy all the spiders if they bother you so much." And man invented the spider trap. Thus man became an inventor. But he was not smart enough to catch all the spiders.

And Man started to invent the great trains and the cars and motorcycles and everything that moves on the street. And he built the big ugly houses and invented the smart computers. And after Man had invented all of this he saw that it was not good. "This is really ugly," said Man to himself, "I do not enjoy any of this. The earth is waste and void. There is a lot of pollution in the water and the air stinks." So Man remembered the Lord God, His creator. Thus Man became a priest.

He started to pray to God and asked Him: "Can you please give me back the fish and the bird because I am tired of my own inventions." And the Lord was impressed that He had created a priest. "My dear priest," said God, "just swim in the water like a fish and the creatures of the sea will swarm with you. Sing the song of the bird and the winged animals shall fly towards you." And the priest began to think for a long time. But all he could recall was the Ave Maria and he could not remember the sound of any bird.

And man went to the mountains to find the sound of birds. After he had climbed for fifteen minutes he became very tired and sat down on a rock to take a rest. When he looked down at the earth he noticed the mosaics of spider webs in the grass. Dew-drops were hanging in the fine nets and reflected the sunlight, glittering like jewels. And man saw that the spider was good. Thus man became an artist.
